A Twist on Hand Drawn Wedding Maps

Published by The Budget-Minded Bride Blog at 2:41 PM

Hand drawn maps are super expensive, so we found an inexpensive idea that you can experiment with for your wedding. All you need is beautiful paper and design your own custom-made labels and you are good to go! I just loved this idea when I found this idea on Style Me Pretty (Style Me Pretty, 2009). This would also be a great addition to an OOT Gift Basket (Out of Town Gift Basket). Creativity is endless with this do it yourself project because you could make your own stickers with the wedding ceremony and reception sites, as well as create a legend of all the local activities to visit during guests stay such as, hotel accommodations, restaurants, entertainment, shopping, and attractions.

Ask The Wedding Expert: Wedding Invitations

Published by The Budget-Minded Bride Blog at 1:36 AM

For Brides and Grooms, choosing wedding invitations can be very overwhelming because you a have variety of styles and designs to choose from, but do not let that scare you off with your shopping mission. Here are some helpful tips to guide you through the land of wedding invitation shopping.

Create an A and B Guest List

The guest lists would consist of the wedding party, family, friends, co-workers, significant others, out of town guests, and children. The A guest list is priority guests that you want to invite to the wedding and the B guest list is of people you would like to invite to the wedding, but unfortunately, your budget does not allow it. However, if someone cancels from List A, then you may select from List B, so that individual can attend in his or her place.

Budget
Understand what your budget is and how many guests will be attending your wedding. The cost of wedding invitations is between 4-6 percent of your budget and when estimating this cost you need to include your invitations, save the date cards, wedding stationery, rsvp card, thank you notes, table tent cards, maps, reception cards, menus, wedding programs, and postage. Please make sure you also order at least an extra 20 invitations incase someone did not receive one or you invite those last minute guests.

Timeline
A suggestion is to start ordering your wedding invitations at least 5-6 months in advanced. This gives you plenty of time to mail out invitations, save the date cards, and receives the RSVP cards. If you are having calligrapher or hand addressed items, you will want to have order those items earlier because you need to proofread the text and make final decisions.

Individuals or Sets
Understand what you are purchasing with individuals or sets of wedding invitations and get an itemized breakdown of what you are receiving from the stationers.

Stationers
There are many stationers such as independents, online, mail order, department store, or do it yourself stationers. Independent stationers are small independent print shops who customize invitations and offers additional specialties like in engraving or other specialty methods. Online stationers are for couples who have a small budget, provide excellent sales and offer specials, and can order a bulk discount with wedding invitations. These companies are open 24/7 for your convenience. Mail Order Catalogs can be a great source because items are usually discounted supplies and orders are filled usually very quickly. Department stores offer packages and use of their gift registry. The advantage of shopping with the department store is because of the convenience factor. Departments stores usually have a limited stock, but it offers an up scaled, yet high quality designs. Most of the time, you receive a discounted price on stationery supplies and signing up with a department store provides the bride and groom a free gift registry. Do It Yourself invitations is an excellent option for smaller and tighter budgets. When ordering stock be sure you do not order glossy paper, because it does not feed through your printer well. For the do it yourselfer online shopping is a convenience, so if you are computer savvy individual this process should be fairly easy for you.

Wedding Style and Theme

What is your wedding style is it formal, information, casual, or traditional? Do you have a wedding theme? Match your invitations to reflect your wedding style.

Stationary Printing
Engraved, Thermography, Letterpress, Embossed, Offset, and those are not even all the terms for wedding invitations. If you do not know what the term means ask the stationer to provide you with a visual sample and an explanation of the wedding invitations. Here is frequently used stationary printing terms from About.com:

Engraved Wedding Invitations
Engraving is the most traditional form of wedding invitation printing, and one of the most expensive. The Queen herself would use engraving for a Royal wedding invitation. Text is etched onto a copper plate, which is then coated with ink and wiped clean, leaving the ink only in the indentations. Soft, high-quality paper is pressed hard against the plate, causing it to deform into the etchings. result is raised, crisp text. You can tell true engraving by the "bruise" or dent on the back of the paper (About, 2009).

Thermography
Thermography was developed as a less expensive alternative to engraving. The printer uses ink and a powder resin combined with heat to reproduce the raised lettering effect of engraving. The text has a shiny finish and is often said to not be as sharp as engraving (About, 2009).

Letterpress
This old-fashioned technique has become popular again. A letterpress printer presses inked letters or designs into a piece of paper, forming an indented surface. By repeating the process, he or she can create images with more than one color. Letterpress wedding invitations typically have a vintage or whimsical feel, but they can be designed in more formal styles as well. Many people appreciate the tactile nature of letterpress, although some dislike its lack of crispness (About, 2009).

Embossing or Blind Embossing

Most often used for small insignias, monograms, or return addresses, this process creates a raised impression on paper by running the paper through two metal sheets. When no ink is used, it is called "blind" embossing. Although a printer can perform this service for you, you can also buy a small embosser with your monogram or return address on the plate, allowing you to create custom stationery in a more affordable way(About, 2009).

Offset Printing
Most modern printing is offset printing, also known as lithography. From magazines to postcards, this flat style of printing is a familiar one, and appropriate for an informal wedding invitation. Traditionally, an inked image is transferred from an inked plate to a rubber "blanket", which is then passed over the paper. The quality of offset printing can vary greatly, so be sure to look for a printer who can deliver crisp quality and true colors (About, 2009).

Formal Wedding Invitation Wording Example

(QC Wedding Planning, 2009)
1. Proper names of wedding hosts, without abbreviations or nicknames
2. The request line (asking the guest to come to the wedding and/or reception)
3. The relationship of the bride to the host or hosts
4. Bride’s first and middle name
5. Groom’s First, Middle, and Last Name
6. Day of the Week (Saturday, Sunday)
7. Time of Wedding (six o’clock) and time of day (in the morning or evening)
8. Name of Wedding Location Site
9. City and State/Province where wedding will take place
10. Indication of reception (reception to follow with reception hall name, address, and phone number)

Wedding Planner or DIY Wedding Planning

Please make certain you have your wedding planner update wedding tracking guest list or if you are a do it yourself bride make sure there is a up to date wedding tracking guest list. You can either create one in excel or use inexpensive software to do this yourself. The software I recommend is on my website at http://www.wicksncandlesticks.com/store/wedding.php.

Purchase a Sample Invitation and Please Proofread

Once you are finished with the invitation process one last and final suggestion is to order a SAMPLE product before placing your final order to make certain you like the style of the invitation. When submitting your final order, please proofread and print a copy of your order before submitting the order for print. Proofreading consists of check grammar, spelling, punctuation, and layout. Once you have given approval for the final submission of the proof, you have stated that your order is correct and if changes need to be made it will be at the cost of the customer.

Please make sure you do not get too overwhelmed with the wedding process and take occasion breaks to destress from wedding information overload. I hope this information on wedding invitations will guide you through your wedding invitations shopping experience.

Go Green by Recycling Left Over Wedding Items

Published by The Budget-Minded Bride Blog at 1:46 PM

After your wedding, there are tons of leftover items such as food, flowers, centerpieces decorations, wine bottles, party and wedding favors. The question remains about what you should do with all of items. We just hate throwing perfectly good things away, so we came up with a list of items you can recycle or donate to charity after your wedding reception (Special E, 2009).

Live Flowers
Flowers and Centerpieces can be used at Sunday Service or even your guests might be willing to take home the flowers as keepsake reminders of the special day. Those items can also be donated to nursing homes or children’s hospitals to brighten up spirits of an individual who is sick. Some bridesmaids have a keepsake shadow box with an invitation, put dried flowers in the box, and use the shadow box as wall art. Another idea is that live flowers can also be turned in to potpourri for gift giving.

Silk Flowers
Brides have been known to have each of the bridesmaids take their bouquets or centerpiece arrangements home with them as a keepsake. However, if you want to make some money you could sell on your items on BravoBride or Ebay.

Food
There are church programs that offer special lunches to people in need on certain days of the week or there are rescue programs, which take the leftovers to feed the hungry and homeless.

Candles
Used or Unused candles can be provided for emergency supplies to families that have lost long-term access to electrical power due to a major storm or natural disaster. If you know someone that has a fireplace in their home, they can collect candle wax and mix candle wax with the wood chips to make fire starters for their fireplace.

Wedding Favors
Wedding favors can be given as thank you gifts to caregivers, nurses, teachers, food pantry workers, and other individuals donate their time or assist those in need.

Wine Bottles
Wine bottle corks or caps can be reused as jewelry or decorative crafting projects. Proceeds from these items will be donated to relief agencies and charitable organizations.

Programs and Tent Cards
Left over programs and tent cards can be donated and recycled for other useful products.

If you do not have time to donate to local programs yourself after your wedding reception, we found this wonderful website named Special E. Before the wedding, assign one of your bridesmaids or groomsmen to this special task after the wedding reception. If you are using Special E, this service comes in after an event and items are donated to different places such as homeless shelters, soup kitchens, missions, churches, food pantries, nursing homes, hospitals, schools, recycling centers, and relief agencies around the world. Special E has a list of items they accept, so be sure to visit their website at http://www.thespeciale.com or email them for more information at info@thespeciale.com.

Remember, recycling is beneficial to you and our environment!

Bridal Name Change

Published by The Budget-Minded Bride Blog at 1:50 PM

After you get married brides forget about all the work that goes into a name change once the bride is married. There is so much paperwork, it seems endless because you have to change on paperwork such as passports, mortgage, USPS, drivers license voter registration, utility bills, and credit cards and those are just to name a few.

Instead of painstaking hours of writing and possibly getting tendinitis, I found a great place online that takes the pain out of filling out so much paperwork in a snap, and the website is MissNowMrs.com. This website has you fill out their auto forms and once you fill out all the paper work, you print the documents, review the paperwork, and mail the forms to the instructed agencies. Additional information included is the service fee each agency charges when you send in the paperwork.

This website offers two options of services, it offers the basic service, which is $19.95 and complete services is $29.95 and is very secure. Matter of fact, the website is protected by McAfee and VeriSign Secured and is a member of the Better Business Bureau Reliability Program. Any bride should feel very secure with their online shopping experience with this company.

Remember, there is no more filling out tons of forms, postage, and getting tendinitis! The website is secure and you save money and time by utilizing this website.

P.S. This makes a great bridal gift for a bridal shower and when making a purchase you will feel good in knowing they are donating part of the proceeds towards The Breast Cancer Foundation.

Create a Photo Station at Your Wedding

Published by The Budget-Minded Bride Blog at 10:16 AM

I was wondering if there were any weddings that incorporated a wedding photo download station for their guests at their wedding, so I did some research and found that there were couples who were incorporating a DIY Wedding Download Photo Station for their guests. The reason why this photo station was incorporated into wedding receptions is that there are instances when the photographer you hired will not be able to get all the photos that your guests would take at the wedding ceremony and reception site, so it is a nice option incorporate a download photo station at your reception.

The first option I will discuss is the "do it yourself" option because it is a little cheaper and if you are tech savvy all you need to do is find someone who is willing to man the wedding photo download station or hire a college student to man the station for a while.

Recommended Items:
1 Laptop (Purchase one or use one a friend’s laptop for FREE)
2 USB Flash Drives
1 USB Memory Card Reader
• A Computer Savvy Friend or Hire College Student
• Plug In’s (Outlet Close By)
Surge Protector

Guests Items:
• Digital Camera with External Flash Card
2 USB Flash Drives

Wedding Favors:
Custom USB Key
DVD Wedding Favors

When setting up your photo station place your laptop near the door at the reception site, so you can make sure you obtain the guests photos when they enter or leave the building. Make sure that the MC or DJ makes casual announcement reminders throughout the evening regarding the download photo station. You can also print out note cards on the table or create signage to remind the guests about the wedding download photo station as well.

The second option is for those who are not computer savvy, I found this great option online named the Canditto. Canditto is a small box where guests can upload images taken at the wedding. It is pretty simple to use and this rules out recruiting or hiring a person to man the wedding photo station.

Canditto Steps and Instructions on Rental Information:

Step 1
Order Your Canditto Online
You can rent your Canditto any time of the day or night from Canditto.com. Start by creating and logging in to your account. From there you can reserve and pay for your Canditto rental using your Visa or MasterCard. Your transactions are always safe with us. ($450 a week rental for the Canddito Box)

Step 2

We will express-ship your Canditto to you, or someone you choose. It will arrive on the Thursday before your special day. (Free Shipping-Canditto is sent to your free of charge!)

Step 4
You Keep The Thumb Drives With Your Photos (Two Free Travel Drives)
At the end of your celebration, remove the two identical thumb drives. Keep one for yourself and keep the other as a backup, or an instant gift to your new in-laws.

Step 5
Send Canditto Back
Send Canditto back in the same shipping container. We include prepaid postage and mailing labels to make it easy and free. (Free Shipping-Canditto is returned free of charge!)

Step 6
Share And Cherish Your Big Day Forever

Photo Guest Book

Published by The Budget-Minded Bride Blog at 2:30 AM

Creating a photo guest book captures the special memories of your wedding day. We found two types of guest books in our online research, one was Kolo Wedding Albums, which we found to be rather inexpensive and offers a variety of price points for Polaroid photos or the couple could purchase standard photo guest book from WicksnCandlesticks for digital photos. Either place offers a personalized engraved wedding plate for the front of the album. After you shopped for your photo guest book, assign a friend or family member as the photographer for your photo guest book attendant.

Designate a special table to the guest book attendant and provide all the necessity items such as trashcan, pens, and markers. If you have an opportunity have one of your bridesmaids decorate the table as well. On top of the table, place the writing utensils in a decorative pencil holder along side with framed photo of the happy couple with a personal message by your photo guest book, so guests can sign their names as well as writing their well wishes to the bride and groom. If the guest book attendant takes photos of guests before the ceremony at the assigned table, make sure they ask permission to take a Polaroid or digital photo of the guest, so their photo maybe added to the guest book.

This is a fun and interactive keepsake guest book that your guests will love and also creates long lasting wedding memories for the newly married couple.

DIY Honeymoon Packing List and Travel Tips

Published by The Budget-Minded Bride Blog at 12:39 PM

Before going on your honeymoon, you need to get organized with choosing the proper luggage for the honeymoon trip and create a great packing list for the luggage and carry-on pieces.

By being organized before hand, helps a couple be prepared and there is no second guessing about leaving important items behind. By printing out this DIY Honeymoon Packing List will allow you to stay organized before the trip.

After printing the Honeymoon Packing List, it is now time to purchase a multi-functional piece of luggage. There are many sites to visit, but my personal favorite is the Samsonite brand because of durability, multiple compartments, and sturdiness.

Once a piece of luggage is selected, the tricky part is following all the airline rules with personal items for your luggage, so a good rule of thumb is to purchase small travel sized items as suggested on TSA. If you do not have travel sized tubes for packing, you can either pick up travel items in any store or even shop online for travel size items such as Minimus. Minimus offers many name brand items in three-ounce sizes like deodorant, hair care, shaving cream and more. After purchasing these items, make sure you put them in a plastic zip lock bag for screening at the airport.

After selecting the travel sized tube items, make sure you purchase these handy items for packing, which are SpaceBags To Go Travel Set. SpaceBags are so convenient, compact, and keeps items organized, so travelers can pack many items in their suitcase.

I hope you enjoyed my travel tips and the free downloadable packing list! When printing the packing list make two copies (to and from). Couples should now be very prepared for the honeymoon trip, so enjoy and happy traveling!

Ask the Wedding Expert: Bad Luck Before Wedding Scenario

Published by The Budget-Minded Bride Blog at 8:25 PM

Ask the Expert Question:
I am the matron of honor at my best friends wedding. She has made it clear she does not to see her husband before the ceremony. The worse case scenario in my mind of what could happen at the wedding ceremony site would be if the bride and the attendants have arrived at the hotel to get ready before the wedding and the bride checks into the hotel, and see her future husband stroll through the lobby. Direct eye contact is made between the bride and the groom and I know the bride will panic about how it’s “bad luck” to see the bride before she gets married. What should I do?

Ask The Wedding Expert Answer:
As the matron of honor, I would personally discuss the benefits of seeing each other to the bride and groom before the ceremony since she has already expressed her feelings about the situation. I would also express to the bride there are benefits, such as more time with wedding party and it might be relaxing to see your soon to be husband. Additional things to consider is the ceremony and reception pictures, because if photos are taken before the wedding, then guests are not kept waiting and if you do things before the ceremony, things are not being rushed.

However, if the bride was adamant to the matron of honor about not being seen on her wedding day I would assign four different people and including you to keep your eye on the group and to abide by the brides wishes. I would not make a guarantee, but I would say as the matron of honor, that you would do your best that the bride and groom will not see each other before the ceremony.

Wedding CD/DVD Favors

Published by The Budget-Minded Bride Blog at 11:55 AM

Today, many brides and grooms are creating and inventing new ideas with wedding favors. One idea that is being implementing by couples all over the world is Wedding CD/DVD because they are inexpensive and it is a great keepsake for your guests.

Some brides and grooms have recording professionals, DJ, or photographer that charges a fee to design a slide show of their wedding pictures or video on a CD/DVD. If your budget does not allow to pay for a professional service, this can easily can be created in PowerPoint or any movie making software for those who are do it yourselfers.

Avery is a great place to get your free templates for labels, or if you own a Light Scribe CD/DVD burner this is a great option as well. Avery labels usually cost under $10.00 and you can purchase those online or if you want use Light Scribe, this would be the best option and cost-effective. Light Scribe is a technology that uses a special disc drive, media, and label-making software to burn labels directly onto CDs and DVDs and you can find that item on Tiger Direct, usually under $50.00. Finally, you need a beautifully designed CD/DVD jackets to protect your CD in style, which we offer those items on WicksnCandlesticks.

Once you have the above-mentioned items, next the decision to make would be the items you want to include on your video or images on your wedding CD. Here is a list of ideas that could be used on your wedding CD/DVD: wedding preparation (such as the wedding dress, hair, make-up) wedding ceremony, exchange of vows, unity candle lighting, wedding invitations, wedding location (church), and reception hall. Along with your sideshow, you could include well wishes video from the reception and get comments from your guest and if you had a wishing tree, the couple read aloud the wedding wishes from the wishing tree.

On the jewel case insert design, you could have printed paper or labels of the couples favorite songs, listed music (first dance, father-daughter dance, mother son-dance,last dance, and cake cutting) poems, photos, scripture, wedding colors, wedding flowers, and more and include a wedding picture at the top of the inside cover. Another idea would also to write a thank you note for your guest who attended and shared in your wedding celebration.

Remember, there is no limit on your creativity when designing your personalized CD/DVD keepsake because this personalized gift will be remembered for years and years to come.
